Finding it hard to say no? We often take on so much responsibility as we always want to please those around us and be a ‘yes’ person. This is very common in today’s busy, achievement-focused world, but luckily it’s relatively simple to get things back in balance.
This tendency to want to fix everyone’s problems or be the go to person for help and resolutions is more commonly found in women but can be experienced by men also.
‘There are not enough hours in my day!’: What to do if you give too much and ask for too little;
If you’re a person who gives a lot of their time to others – sacrificing for your family, volunteering your time with charities, going above and beyond the call of duty at work – it’s easy to become overwhelmed and exhausted. Giving is a wonderful thing to do and reflects your innate generosity, but you do need to make room to also receive the good things in life. This can be as simple as taking your partner up on their offer to do the dishes so that you can relax with a good book, or as challenging as accepting that you need to hire an assistant or additional team members so that you can cut back your excessive work hours.
Remember: if you allow yourself to burn out, you won’t be any help to others or yourself.
We can often lash out if we allow this overwhelming feeling to build up. It is important to know your restrictions and capabilities, how much time you have available and how much energy and time you need to dedicate to yourself. Finding a balance to giving and taking is an inside job, understanding how you operate as a person. what supports you and what doesn’t is always the best approach.
Feeling stuck?
Sometimes it’s hard to identify what we need to change about our own lives. If this is true for you at the moment, life or career coaching could give you the perspective you need to move forward.
